Freddy Ramirez has dedicated the past 25+ years to keeping our families safe.
As a father and a grandfather, this is more than a job – it’s personal.
As the Director of the Miami-Dade Police Department and Chief of Safety and Emergency Response, Freddy has earned the trust of the community, reduced gun violence, and kept our neighborhoods safe. And today, Miami-Dade County has one of the lowest rates of gun violence of any major metro area in the nation.
Raised by grandparents who fled the Castro regime and working-class parents in Hialeah, Freddy Ramirez didn’t have a lot growing up – but his family instilled in him the values of hard work, perseverance, and staying true to your word.
In 1995, after marrying his highschool sweetheart and graduating from the University of Miami, Freddy joined the Miami-Dade Police Department as a beat cop. He worked his way up every single rank – through criminal and special investigations, homicide, robbery, special victims, agriculture, street violence task force, and more. Now leading the department, Freddy brings the unmatched experience, credibility, and trust we deserve in our elected sheriff.
Freddy’s leadership is tested and proven, and our community is safer because of his service. Working closely with leaders at all levels of the community, Freddy has helped shape major public safety initiatives generating proven results – including:
- The County’s “Peace and Prosperity Plan,” which invests in our law enforcement, works to prevent crime, and creates public safety programs to keep our families safe
- “Operation Community Shield,” which has helped get more than 2,500 guns off the street while doubling down on successful violence prevention programs
- Funding youth programs to put kids on a better path with more opportunities for the future
- Leading the public safety response during the COVID pandemic and the deadly Surfside and FIU bridge collapses
- Creating the homicide task force in response to police shootings, overseeing one of the largest body camera deployments in the nation, banning deadly choke-holds, and providing officers with additional bias training
For nearly three decades, Freddy has been here for our community when we needed him. Throughout all of his service, he has put the people of Miami-Dade first by always prioritizing community trust and integrating feedback to constantly improve the department.
Above all else, he is a dedicated husband, devoted father, and loving grandfather who is running for sheriff to maintain the longstanding credibility of the Miami-Dade Police Department, ensure public safety, and to protect the progress we’ve made together.
